Center for Security Policy


Center for Security Policy was established on January 4, 2005 as a part of Institute of Political Sciences of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University in Prague. Since its establishment the Center for Security Policy has been involved in a research of security affairs, security policy, and emergency response systems; it prepares scenarios of the future security development in the Czech Republic, in Europe and in the world; particular attention is paid to the Czech security policy and its decision making processes. The Center is also involved in and encourages and promotes public discussion in the field of security policy; it organizes biannual international security conferences, regular workshops and public debates. The cooperation on several projects has been established between the Center and Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Interior, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs including the contribution in preparing of the Security strategy of the Czech Republic, White Paper on Defence, and Population Protection Concept. Furthermore our researchers are involved in teaching at the security studies master program at Faculty of Social Sciences organizing the course on the Czech Security Policy.



Goals and Long-term Tasks


  • Research on security, security policy, and security systems

  • Foresight in security of the Czech Republic, Europe, and the world

  • Research on formation and implementation of the security policy of the Czech Republic

  • Expertise and consultancy for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defence, and Ministry of Interior of the Czech Republic (Security Strategy of the CR, White Paper on Defence, Concept of Population Protection)

  • Project “Adaptation of the Security System of the Czech Republic to Changing Economic, Social, Demographic, and Geopolitical Realities” within the security research programme of the CR 2010-2015

  • Project “Trends, risks, and scenarios of the security evolvement in the world, Europe and the Czech Republic – impacts on the security policy and security system of the Czech Republic” within the security research programme of the CR 2010-2015

  • Participation in project “Security of Citizens and Crisis Management” by Population Protection Institute, Fire and Rescue Service CR

  • Lecturing in Security studies at Faculty of Social Sciences CU (course “Security Policy of the Czech Republic”)

  • Promoting dialogue with public on security policy issues in national and international context (conferences, workshops, debates)
