Information for the students of Political Science

Duties of doctoral students:


The studies begun in the academic year of 2012/2013 and further


Each doctoral student is required to carry out following duties specified in the individual study plan before signing in for a doctoral exam:

  • have one credit for a doctoral seminar, i.e. a general methodological seminar concerning elaboration of the dissertation thesis. The seminar runs for 6 months (three years). The students who enrolled on the university in the academic year 2012/2013 are required to take the doctoral seminar which is included within OPPA in the first two semesters. In the following two years (four semesters) they take a doctoral seminar with their supervisor.

  • have two credits for two departmentally specialised methodological seminars offered and organised at the FSS CU. Precondition for acquiring each of the credits (the credits are given by relevant head of the specialised seminar) is completion of the two-semestral course within the programme

  • have one credit for an essay which thematically relates to the basic theoretical problems of the dissertation thesis. The credit is given based on successful public defence (it is possible to make use of a doctoral seminar or a conference of doctoral students). The credit is given by relevant supervisor.



Studies begun in the academic year of 2011/2012 or earlier:


Each doctoral student is required to carry out following duties specified in the individual study plan before signing in for a doctoral exam:

  • have one credit for a doctoral seminar – general methodological seminar which runs for 5 semesters – the credit is given by the relevant supervisor

  • have two credits for two departmentally specialised methodological seminars offered and organised at the FSS CU. Precondition for acquiring each of the credits (the credits are given by relevant head of the specialised seminar) is completion of the two-semestral course within the programme.

  • have one credit for an essay which thematically relates to the basic theoretical problems of the compiled dissertation thesis. The credit is given by relevant supervisor.



Other duties of doctoral students


There are also other duties which are part of study plan of each doctoral student, namely:

  • Participation on scientific activities, in the form of participation on research projects carried on by Department of Political Science of IPS of FSS CU, or by taking part in grant competition in Czech Republic or through foreign grant agencies; submitted projects must be always related to disertation thesis project of each doctoral student.

  • If it is required by the topic of the disertation thesis or by doctoral student's previous studies, his or her advisor can set in the study plan, that doctoral student should during the first three semesters of studies attend selected lectures (at most three) from the subjects that correspond with the topic of his or her dissertation thesis, and consecutively pass the appropriate exams.

  • Publication duty: Each doctoral student has to routinely publish results of his or her own research related to the dissertation thesis, in Czech and foreign scholarly (impacted or peer-reviewed) journals.

  • Foreign study visit: Doctoral student has to undergo long term foreign study visit, that enable him or her to gain necessary knowledge and that significantly contributes to writing of dissertation thesis, which is both relevant in its discipline and brings new important findings.

  • Participation on conferences: Each doctoral student has to attend (especially international) conferences which allow him or her to present results of his or her scientific work and discuss it with wider scientific community.



State doctoral exam


State doctoral exam consists of three thematic areas, which test doctoral student's knowledge in following fields:

  • profound knowledge of doctoral student's dissertation thesis, especially the theoretical aspect of its topic and student's ability to solve stated scientific problems

  • orientation in the main methodological issues of Political Science discipline

  • orientation in literature relevant to the given discipline specialization


Specific scope and content of state doctoral exam is delimited by subjects included in student's individual study plan, or by other specifications included in it.


Dissertation thesis defence:


Doctoral student's most fundamental duty and the main indicator of success of his studies is completion of the dissertation thesis, which is also the ultimate goal of entire studies.
