Mgr. Tomáš Kučera, Ph.D.

The institutionalisation of collective armed violence in society and politics is an overarching theme of my research and teaching. I received PhD at the Aberystwyth University, UK, in 2014. Under the supervision of Professor Martin Alexander, Dr Kamila Stullerova, and Dr Berit Bliesemann de Guevara I engaged in an extensive critique of Samuel Huntington’s seminal work in the field of civil-military relations, The Soldier and the State. Through the in-depth reading of liberal thinking about the things military my thesis has revealed liberal features of military and defence policies of Western European societies, Germany and the United Kingdom in particular. In an adapted version and with an additional case study on Swedish military policy added, the thesis was published by Routledge under the title The Military and Liberal Society in 2018.

The thesis research has led me to develop curiosity in two other, yet related research topics, on which I recently published journal articles and which I am to pursue under the collaborative framework of VITRI: military ethics and the European military integration.

All of these research interests are also reflected in my teaching at the Department of Security Studies. My courses Armed Forces and Society, Technology and Warfare, and The Ethics of Armed Conflicts benefit from my curiosity into the issues related with institutionalisation of collective armed violence. Moreover, engagement of students into these topics notably enriches me with a valuable feedback and motivation for further research.
