Special registration for a block course "Making of Modern Asia" is now opened

Dear students,

prof. Aleksey A. Maslov from the School of Asian Studies, Moscow, will give a short block course "Making of Modern Asia" at the Institute of Political Studies. The course will take place between 21st and 24th Novemeber. All the IPS students can register in SIS from 6th November until 20th November for JPM329.

This course focuses on the cultural, historical, social and economic background in East and South-East Asia and it will examine how the Asian states as well as Western powers have tried (and are trying) to shape the geopolitical environment since the mid-18th century to the present. For more information see the syllabus below.

International internship - CEU San Pablo - spring 2018

Dear colleagues,

CEU San Pablo University is looking for an international students or graduates from other European countries to work in our International Office as International Assistant. The profile we are interested in are active and creative students and graduates, with a high level of English and medium level of Spanish.

The candidates will have the opportunity of working in the International Office (Campus Moncloa) of CEU San Pablo University during the spring semester of the academic year 2017-18 (8th January to 31st July 2018). In addition, CEU San Pablo University offers free Spanish Language courses and 200 € per month for living expenses.

More specific information about the conditions of the internship and the application is enclosed.

The IAPSS World Congress

The IAPSS World Congress is the largest annual event hosted by IAPSS – the International Association for Political Science Students. As customary for our biggest event of the year we are expecting 250 students from around the world to join us in the “City of Light” of Paris, France, to examine this year’s Congress theme – ‘Diversity and Globalization’.

The ticket price will be announced on November 1, when registration opens. Should you have questions, please contact the World Congress Department at wc-info@iapss.org. We look forward to welcoming you to Paris in April 2018!

4. ročník Prague Populism Conference - Call for Papers

Institute for International Studies Charles University in Prague together with Heinrich Böll Stiftung and Goethe Institut organize 21 and 22 May 2018 4th Prague Populism Conference titled "Current Populism in Europe: Culture, History, Identity". The conference is dedicated to the claim to represent the “will of the people”, the rejection of “elites”, the concept of “a glorious past”, nationalist narratives, and a certain understanding of identity and culture promulgated by populist parties, leaders and movements across Europe. In order to fully understand the goals and successes of these actors in European politics, it is essential to look at the respective historical context in which they have emerged and to analyse their politics of history and culture. Within the scope of the 4th Prague Populism Conference, the organisers encourage applicants to submit papers on the following issues:

  • Populism in historical and cultural perspective
  • The use of historical and nationalist narratives in populist communicationComparative studies of current populist parties and movements in Europe
  • Populism and the politics of identity

Confirmed speakers:

  • Ruth Wodak (Lancaster University)
  • Francisco Panizza (London School of Economics)
  • Hans-Jürgen Puhle (Goethe University Frankfurt)
  • Gianpietro Mazzoleni (University of Milan)

Applicants are invited to submit abstracts of up to 300 words and short CVs to populism@fsv.cuni.cz by 31 January 2018. Accepted papers will be announced by16 February 2018.There is no conference fee for participants.
