Department of Security Studies

Established on 1 October 2015, the Department of Security Studies (DSS) aims to promote dynamic development of the existing Master’s programmes (Bezpečnostní studia and Master in International Security Studies), complement them with other degree programmes of international and transdisciplinary scope, stimulate team research activities of its members and also channel the department’s efforts within the Faculty of Social Sciences more effectively towards the university, broader public, and especially international academic environment. The DSS was conceived as a relatively small department of an interconnected team of experts with outstanding scholarly and publishing achievements whose research know-how is directly reflected in their teaching activities.

The Department members provide teaching for the programmes of Bezpečnostní studia (in Czech) and International Security Studies while simultaneously lecturing some courses within the International Relations Master’s Programme and the Political Science – International Relations Bachelor’s Programme. Furthermore, they significantly participate in the International Relations PhD Programme and provide their supervision for PhD candidates focusing on the field of security. The Department’s efforts in the academic realm and primarily in the broader public sphere is closely linked to the activities of its research centre Deutsch Security Square whose research, publishing and conference work continues the legacy of the Charles University graduate Karl W. Deutsch, including the management of his personal library.

The Head of the Department of Security Studies is JUDr. PhDr. Tomáš Karásek, Ph.D., his Deputy is PhDr. Vít Střítecký, M.Phil., Ph.D., who also coordinates the Master in International Security Studies (MISS) Programme. The MISS Programme, together with the Czech language Master’s Programme of Bezpečnostní studia, is directed by doc. PhDr. Běla Plechanovová, CSc. Mgr. Tomáš Kučera, Ph.D. acts as Programme Coordinator for the Bezpečnostní studia Programme. The list of all Department members can be found here.
