A student of German and Russian philology at universities in Moscow and Prague, he graduated from the Institute of Political Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University (M.A. and Ph.D. in International Relations) and from the Institute of Humanities, Saint Petersburg State Polytechnic University (LL.M.). Thanks to a Fulbright fellowship, he spent two semesters in 2006-2007 as a research fellow at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. In 2013, he was awarded tenure in International Area Studies by the Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University.

Emil’s current research lies at the intersection of political science and sociology as he focuses on asymmetric and irregular conflicts (insurgency and counterinsurgency; terrorism and counterterrorism; civil wars and ethnic conflicts) with emphasis on the political ethnography and micro-dynamics of armed conflicts and groups (incl. radicalization, mobilization; jihadi groups; socio-cultural aspects of violence). Geographically, his research focuses on the post-Soviet space, partially also Turkey and Iran.

Under pen name Souleimanov, Emil has published six English-language monogaphs (Palgrave Macmillan, US Army War College); approx. 30 journals in leading international impacted journals, incl. top journals in the field of Political Science (World Politics, International Security); security studies (Terrorism and Political Violence, Journal of Strategic Studies); area studies (Post-Soviet Affairs, Europe-Asia Studies; Middle Eastern Policy, Third World Quarterly, Problems of Post-Communism); ethnic and migration studies (Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, Ethnicities). In addition, Emil has authored dozens of peer-reviewed and analytical articles, monogaphs, and volumes published in English, German, French, and Czech languages.

Emil has worked out numerous research grants and expert analyses for various Czech and international grant agencies, as well as the NATO and the Czech ministries of defence and foreign affairs. Within the last decade or so, Emil has taught or attended approx. 30 international conferences and expert workshops at Harvard University, Columbia University, Georgetown University, Princeton University, Johns Hopkins University, Boston University, DGAP, etc. He is a frequent commentator of international politics for Czech TV and radio, as well as RFE/RL, Voice of America, and other national and international media. Since 2016, Emil has served as the chair of the Disciplinary Committee of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University.
