Call for papers: War in Ukraine: Lessons for Nationalism Theory?

The ostensible goal of nationalism theory is to understand nationalism, and ideally to provide tools for curbing its dangers. What impact has the field had on the world? Nationalism theorists and their theories have not always influenced policy or policy makers, or persuaded public opinion at large.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine provides nationalism theorists with a concrete opportunity to reflect on the role of nationalism theory in contemporary politics. How are theories of nationalism informing Russian, Ukrainian and other policy makers? When civilians, soldiers, protesters, deserters, or refugees act from nationalist motives, what sorts of nationalism do they implicitly espouse? How well do theories of nationalism explain the conflict? Should nationalism scholars have seen the war coming? Does the war confirm or refute any models of nationalist politics? What are the implications for normative branches of nationalism theory? Are there any practical lessons we ought to have already learned? Alternatively, what lessons should we learn now?

The journal "Nationalism, Memory and Language Politics," published by De Gruyter on behalf of the Charles University in Prague, will publish a themed issue addressing these and related questions! Send your name and affiliaiton, a one-paragraph abstract (c. 150 words), a one-paragraph biography (c. 100 words), and a proposed submission date to Alexander Maxwell (alexander.maxwell@vuw.ac.nz).
