Department of Security Studies
The Department of Security Studies (KBS) was established in 2015 with the aim of supporting the dynamic development of existing master's courses (Security Studies and Master in International Security Studies), supplementing them with other fields of study with international and transdisciplinary overlap, strengthening team research activities of its members and promoting security studies agenda at the university as well as in the wider national and international environment. KBS is a research intensive department hosting a team of experts who achieve top research results and project their research know-how into their teaching activities.
The members of the department provide teaching in the degree programs of Bezpečnostní studia, Master in International Security Studies (MISS), and Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree International Master in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies (IMSISS) and at the same time teach some subjects within the master's degree programs of Mezinárodní vztahy/International Relations and Bachelor's degree in Political Science and International Relations and Politics, Philosophy and Economics. They also participate in the doctoral program of International Relations and lead doctoral students focusing on security issues. The department's activities in the academic and especially wider public space are closely connected with the activities of three university centres of excellence - Periculum: Human-Machine Nexus and International Order, Peace Research Center Prague and The Center for the Transdisciplinary Research of Violence, Trauma and Justice.
The head of the Department of Security Studies is Doc. Vít Střítecký, M.Phil., Ph.D., who is also the guarantor of the Czech Master's degree in Security Studies and the English program Master in International Security Studies. The coordination of Security Studies is provided by Mgr. Tomáš Kučera, Ph.D., the coordinator of the MISS program is Mgr. Angelika Suchanová, PhD. The guarantor of the IMSISS program at Charles University is prof. PhDr. Emil Aslan, Ph.D. and its coordinator is Mgr. Angelika Suchanová, PhD. The Academic Supervisor and Chairman of the Study Board for the doctoral program International Relations is prof. PhDr. Emil Aslan, Ph.D.
