Michal Smetana je akademický pracovník (docent) na Institutu mezinárodních studií FSV UK, ředitel univerzitního výzkumného centra excelence Peace Research Center Prague (PRCP) a vedoucí Experimental Lab for International Security Studies (ELISS). Titul Ph.D. získal na Univerzitě Karlově v oboru Mezinárodní vztahy a habilitační zkoušku složil na Masarykově univerzitě v oboru Politické vědy. Dříve byl rovněž hostujícím výzkumníkem na Stanfordově univerzitě v Kalifornii, Stockholmském institutu pro výzkum míru (SIPRI) a Frankfurtském institutu pro výzkum míru (PRIF). Ve svém výzkumu a výuce se zabývá tématy propojující bezpečnostní studia, mezinárodní vztahy a politickou psychologii, s důrazem na problematiku jaderných a chemických zbraní, kontrolu zbrojení a odzbrojení, šíření ZHN, teorii odstrašování, mezinárodní normy a experimentální metody. Je autorem několika odborných knih a řady článků ve špičkových vědeckých časopisech.
